An apparel worker took her life after being raped by man who she used to work with, in the Agrabad area under Double Mooring police station in Chittagong city.
The 17-year-old girl, who used to live with her sister and brother-in-law, committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan in her room in Mogoltuli in the morning on April 24.
Doublemooring police station Inspector (Investigation) Zahir Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that the sister of the victim had lodged a case against the Uber driver under Section 306 of the Penal Code.
"We arrested the driver, identified as Badsha, from the Pathantuli area early Sunday. Later, he was produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shafi Uddin, where Badsha gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure," said Inspector Zahir.
Quoting Badsha's confession, police said he and the girl once worked in the same garment factory, and he used to harass her.
After leaving that job, he began work as a driver using ride-sharing app Uber.
On April 23, he picked the girl up in his car and took her to an isolated place near Agrabad Jamboree Field and raped her.
After the girl lost consciousness, Badsha and his mother took her to a hospital in Agrabad. Later, he took her to his house after she received primary treatment at the hospital.
When the girl's condition deteriorated, he admitted the girl to a hospital and fled.
After being informed, the girl's brother-in-law took her home, where she committed suicide on April 24.
The girl's sister subsequently filed a case accusing Badsha of instigating her suicide.
Police have recovered the girl's bag, mobile phone and ID card from Badsha’s house.
However, a statement issued by Uber said Badsha was neither registered nor associated with them. They also expressed condolences to the deceased’s family.
