A retired army man has been stabbed to death by rivals in a clash over the March 24 Union Parishad polls in Narail sadar upazila.

The incident occurred at Shalikha bazaar area in Bashgram union around 10pm on Thursday.

The deceased is Dablu Sheikh, 48, son of Abdus Salam Sheikh and brother of Bashgram union Awami League General Secretary Bablu Sheikh.

According to locals, there was growing tension between the ruling party and opposition candidates centering on the recently-concluded Upazila Parishad election. During the

election, Bablu Sheikh and his brother Dablu supported opposition candidate Biplob Biswas.

Subsequently, supporters of ruling party candidate Nizamuddin Khan Nilu attacked Bablu and his associates in the Shalikha bazar area. When Dablu tried to deescalate the situation, he was stabbed to death on the spot.

Jashum Uddin, Narail's superintendent of Police (SP), said:"Several meetings had been held to resolve the row between rival candidates. However, the matter could not be resolved and a violent clash ensues. Those who are responsible for the death will be brought to justice.”
