3-month fishing ban at Kaptai Lake from May 1

The ban will be effective till July 31

To protect juvenile fish and increase natural breeding, the district magistrate has put a three-month ban on fishing, transporting, and marketing Kaptai Lake fish, Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid said on Tuesday.

Mamunur said: “The ban will be effective from May 1 to July 31. It will be lifted on further notice. Till then, anyone defying the ban will face legal action.”

“Law enforcement will be on patrol and a mobile court is set up to punish anyone fishing illegally,” he added.

A year-long ban has been imposed on four specific areas of the lake.

During the ban, government will provide Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) rice to registered fishermen.

Md Assaduzaman, manager commander of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) in Rangamati, said: “Sufficient juvenile fish will be released in Kaptai Lake to increase production.

 “Action will be taken against those who use illegal fishing methods,” he added.
