Kalo Bondhu Tripura, a union parishad (UP) member was hacked to death on Friday, when he was returning home after serving two years in prison.
On the way to his home at Nunchori village from Maischori village in Khagrachhari, Kalo Bondhu and his associates were attacked by a group armed with local weapons.
He was killed on the spot and seven of his associates were injured.
Witnesses said they were set upon by Nihar Kanti Tripura and a cohort numbering between 30 and 40.
Khagrachhari Sadar UP Chairman Amre Marma said for a long time there had been disputes between Kalo Bondhu and Chironjit Tripura, father of Nihar kanti over a land.
Kalo Bondhu and his associates, arrested in connection with the murder of Chironjit in May 2017, served two years in prison.
Additional Superintendent of Police MM Salahuddin said police have already begun investigating.
