SAU students stage demo over fellow student’s death by bus

They have also boycotted classes and are observing a mourning day

Students of Sylhet Agriculture University (SAU) have staged demonstrations protesting the death of their fellow student.

The students brought out a procession at 11am on Sunday morning from the campus and ended at the city's central Shaheed Minar premises after parading through the main points of the city.        

Wasim Afnan, 22, a fourth-year student in the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering department of the university, and son of M Abu Zahed Mahbub and Dr Mina Parvin of Rudra village in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj, was crushed to death by a bus after its helper reportedly pushed him off the vehicle at Sherpur in the sadar upazila of Moulvibazar district on Saturday afternoon.

After the incident, students of the university took to the streets and staged demonstrations at the Sylhet bus terminal in South Surma, protesting the death of their fellow student, that night.

They also announced they would boycott classes on Sunday and observe a mourning day.

Meanwhile, the university authorities suspended all classes and examinations for Sunday following the death of their student.

Faisal Khalilur Rahman, assistant director of public relations, confirmed the information.

Police arrested bus helper Masuk Ali, 40, son of Daulat Ali of Teghoria area, from Singchapoir village in Chhatok upazila of Sunamganj district around 2am.

On information, a team from Chhatok Police Station raided Mashuk’s father-in-law’s house and arrested him.

Later, the arrestee was handed over to Moulvibazar District police, said superintendent of Sunamganj Police Barkatullah Khan.
