The Barisal office of the Department of Environment (DoE) has fined 33 brick kilns operating in eleven upazilas of Barisal division.
The DoE fined them a total of Tk 15.55 lakh, filed 31 cases, and jailed two people for violating environmental regulations by setting up illegal brick kilns and ignoring environment conservation law.
DoE Director Abdul Halim said a number of violators were being operated without environmental clearance, and some others were using antiquated technology like drum chimney which emits harmful smoke.
He added that it is the season of burning bricks in kilns, so the DoE has began to operate swift mobile court s more frequently throughout the region after they were empowered by concerned authorities.
In January, mobile courts operations at six brick kilns realized Tk1.9 lakh in fines and in February realized Tk13.65 lakh from 27 brick kilns.
As many as 103 out of 245 brick fields in six districts of Barisal division have continued their illegal operations in violation of environmental law, the DoE director said.
