Update : 17 Feb 2019, 08:02 PM

Lightning brought on by a sudden bout of rain has killed three in two separate incidents across the country.

Two from the same family in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali were killed, while one was killed in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar.

The incidents occurred on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Noman Hossain, 45, and his nephew, Saimun Islam Bappi, 12, from Noakhali, and Rifat Mia, 11, from Moulvibazar.

Bappi was a sixth grade student of Joyag Ideal Academy, while Rifat was a fifth grade student at Baligaon Government Primary School.

Sonaimuri police station Officer-in-Charge, Abdus Samad, said: “Noman was watering the rice field with an irrigation machine. Bappi was there with him.

“It started raining, and they continued to work. Suddenly lightning hit them both, instantly killing them.”

He said the family had no objections so the bodies were handed over to them without a postmortem.

Three other children were injured in Moulvibazar in the same incident. They were all playing football on the school field where the lightning hit Rifat. The injured are receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Kamalganj police station Officer-in-Charge, Md Arifur Rahman, said: “The police were called to the scene. We are looking after the injured.”
