Gazipur workers-police clash: 2 journalists among 20 injured

Around 20 garment industry workers were also injured in the clash

Update : 09 Jan 2019, 03:10 PM

Two journalists of two private television channels have been injured during a chase and counter-chase between agitated apparel workers and the police.

The incident took place at Nawjor area near the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, in Gazipur, around 11am on Wednesday.

Police baton-charged the protesting workers, plus fired tear gas shells and blank rounds to ensure they disperse.

The injured journalists have been identified as Monirul Islam, Gazipur correspondent of Somoy TV; and Rafiqul Islam, Gazipur correspondent of Channel 24. The journalists are undergoing treatment at a local clinic.

Around 20 garment workers were also injured during the clash.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune Gasa police station Officer-in-Charge Ismail Hossain said: "We had to fire tear gas shells and blank rounds to control the crowd. Around 20 people, along with two journalists, were injured during the clash. We are doing everything to maintain law and order."

RMG industry workers—as a part of their ongoing protest over discrepancies in the newly-announced wage structure—blocked different sections of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway; resulting in severe traffic congestion in the Savar and Gazipur area.
