Attack on Zafar Iqbal: Attacker Faizur's uncles held

Two uncles of Faizur, who stabbed noted author and head of Electronic and Electrical Engineering department Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), have been detained by members of law enforcers agencies. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Faizur’s paternal uncle Abdul Kahhar in a drive conducted in Kaliyarkapon area under Derai upazila of Sylhet on Saturday night. The attacker’s maternal uncle Fazlu Mia was detained from the Shekhpara area in the outskirts of Sylhet on the same night. Jalalabad police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Faizul was a madrasa student. After the attack his [Faizur's ] family members left their residence and are currently on the run. “Faizur’s maternal uncle has been brought to this police station. He was interrogated by senior police officers last night [Saturday].” The OC said the police will file a case over the attack. “Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Golam Kibria has already inspected the draft of the case,” he added. According to police sources, no cases have been filed over the incident till Sunday 10am. Zafar Iqbal was speaking at a two-day long fair organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering when he was stabbed in the back of his head by an assailant armed with a knife on Saturday. The attack occurred around 5:40pm. The attacker, a youth identified as Foyzur Rahman Faizul, was immediately taken down and detained by authorities after a severe thrashing. The attacker is currently undergoing treatment at the Sylhet Combined Military Hospital.
