Unidentified men have gunned down a former Union Parishad (UP) member in Rangamati's Naniarchar upazila.
Onadi Ranjan Chakma, a former member of Betchhari UP, was shot dead near Atharo Mile area around 10am on Tuesday, Naniarchar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif confirmed quoting witnesses.
Meanwhile, Naniarchar Sadar union parishad Chairman Jyoti Lal Chakma, who is also the convener of Nabya Mukhosh Bahini Protirodh Committee, issued a press release after the incident, claiming that Onadi was a supporter of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), and that Nabya Mukhosh Bahini, which is a group of UPDF renegades, was involved in his killing.
Nabya Mukhosh Bahini Protirodh Committee has announced a transport strike in the district for Thursday to protest the incident.
