Divers have rescued a man from Shitalakhya River in Narayanganj 28 hours after a bulkhead capsized in the river.
Gijerman Sohag Hawaldar, 35, was rescued around 4pm on Thursday.
Nayanganj Naval Police Inspector Abu Taher confirming the matter said the bulkhead, Musapur, sunk on Tuesday in a collision with a Jessore-bound ferry in front of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation’s dockyard in Narayanganj’s no 2 Dhakeshwari Sonachora area.
All the people on the bulkhead including the driver were able to swim to the river bank except Gijerman who got locked inside the submerged bulkhead’s engine-room, he added.
He said fire service along with BIWTC divers continued a rescue drive from Wednesday and finally rescued Gijerman.
Gijerman was then taken to Narayanganj 300 Bedded Hospital for treatment.
Narayanganj 300 Bedded Hospital’s Emergency department doctor Najin Sultana said: “Luckily, water did not seep into the submerged engine-room and there was sufficient amount of oxygen there which made Gijerman’s survival possible.
“Gijerman is currently in recovery. The incident although has been traumatised him,” he added.
