6 killed in Munshiganj textile mill fire
Six people have been killed in a fire that broke out at Ideal Textile Mill in Munshiganj. Munshiganj Sadar police station acting OC Alamgir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that the dead bodies of 5 men and a woman had been recovered from inside the factory building. The victims were identified as Israfil, 23, Sajib, 23, Nazmul, 22, Babu Mia, 22, Roton Mia, 22, and the 50-year-old cook of the factory Hasina Begum. The fire had originated on the fourth floor of the six-storey building in Muktarpur around 10am on Wednesday and was brought under control at 2:30pm, after three hours of effort from three fire service units. Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Sayla Farjana said four of the mill officials had been handed over to police in connection with the fire. "Families that have lost members will get Tk20,000 each as compensation," she added. The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though there is suspicion that it could have originated from welding sparks. AKM Showkat Ali Mazumder, additional district magistrate of Munshiganj, said a five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Local people are still doubtful about the death toll as nobody from the locality is being allowed to enter the building.
