Masum locked into a verbal skirmish with the followers of Rayhan Chowdhury, general secretary of district Chhatra League, on Tuesday night
Members of opposition group have allegedly killed an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League over previous dispute in Lamapara area in Shibganj, Sylhet.
Masum was a member of Chhatra League’s Surma Group and used to run a business organisation named JD Sports in city’s Bandar Bazar area.
Biplob, a leader of Chhatra League’s Surma Group told the Dhaka Tribune Masum had locked into a verbal skirmish with the followers of Rayhan Chowdhury, general secretary of district Chhatra League, on Tuesday night.
“Following the scuffle, members of the belligerent group summoned Khaled, younger brother of Masum, on Wednesday morning and informed Masum that his brother had an accident in Lamapara.”
“On information, Masum rushed to the spot and was heavily beaten up and stabbed by those with whom he had a brawl in the previous night,” added Biplob.
Local residents rescued Masum from the spot and rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead around 3:45pm.
Doctors spotted a number of injury marks in his thigh and lower abdomen, said Biplod.
However, Rayhan Chowdhury completely denied of any group named after him and claimed that he was not connected to anyone who involved with politics in Sylhet metropolitan city.
Rayhan said that someone had intentionally put his name in this connection while the incident took place over an internal conflict between two groups of Sylhet MC College.
Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Poran police station told the Dhaka Tribune that police had visited the spot and were trying to arrest the miscreants involved in the incident.
