A man has been arrested on charge that he tortured his wife by burning her body parts including her genitals with a hot iron rod in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila. The accused is Tomij Uddin, 50. Kaliganj police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Moniruzamman said being informed by their elder son, the law enforcers had rescued the victim and detained Tomij on Saturday. The victim said Tomij viciously had assaulted her on Monday last week and locked her in the house since then. The man had even mutilated some parts of her breasts, she added. The victim’s mother Khosh Akhter said Tomij and her daughter who were maternal cousins got married many years ago. They have four sons. She said Tomjid who owns a tea-stall sent her wife as a worker in Lebanon in 2013 due to their poor financial condition. Khosh said: “My daughter used to send her salary to Tomij during her two years' stay in Lebanon. She returned to Bangladesh in 2015.” “In her absence, Tomij married five other women but none of those marriages lasted. “After my daughter returned to Bangladesh, the couple had several fights regarding different issues. On Monday, when my daughter asked for the account of the money she sent to Tomij, he went furious and started torturing her, locking her in the house,” Khosh added. Police had filed a cased in connection with the incident, the SI added.
