Update : 02 Jul 2017, 07:08 PM
A regional commander of Chittagong Hill Tracts-based United People’s Democratic Front’s (UPDF) insurgency arm was detained on Sunday by army personnel from Baillachhari Joint Bridge area under Guimara upazila in Khagrachhari. Security sources told the Dhaka Tribune that, acting on a tip-off, an army unit led by Matiranga Military Zone staff officer Captain Tanjim Hossain detained 25-year-old Dipan Chakma alias Chailla from the area’s Mandir Road. A locally-made gun, two rounds of ammunition and a machete were recovered from Dipan’s possession as well. Guimara police station OC Zobarul Huq confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that Dipan was not handed over to police custody as of 6pm on Sunday. However, the OC said he was aware of the development. The Dhaka Tribune attempted to reach UPDF spokesperson Niran Chakma via mobile phone, but he never picked up.
