Seven Shibir leaders held with petrol bombs

Some 35 Jamaat-Shibir men had been holding a secret meeting at Rasel Shishu Park before staging a demonstration demanding release of convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee

Police arrested seven leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir with petrol bombs when they attempted to conduct subversive activities in the district town on Tuesday.

The arrestees are Ashraful Islam, 20, president of Tongbhanga Union unit; Golam Azam, 22, secretary of ward 3 unit; Nobinur Islam, 21, of Hadibanda upazila; Mominul Islam, 22, Lalmonirhat Govt College unit secretary; Abdur Rahim, 19, Sadar upazila unit secretary; Sirajul Islam, 21, secretary of management department at Lalmonirhat Govt College; and Shafiul Islam, 21, secretary of zoology department at the college.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police station, said that some 35 Jamaat-Shibir men had been holding a secret meeting at Rasel Shishu Park before staging a demonstration demanding release of convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

Police raided the area on a tip-off and arrested the seven while others managed to flee the scene.

The law enforcers recovered five petrol bombs, local weapons and radical books from their possessions. Later they were sent to jail through the court.
