Locals were caught by surprise after a large group of fishes found floating dead from Koshaghat to Raghunathpur Bridge in the Mathabhanga River of Chuadanga on Friday morning.

“Oxygen depletion due to heavy raid could be the reason of the massive fish deaths. The situation will be normal after the next spell of rain,” Damurhuda Fisheries Officer Aiyub Ali told the Dhaka Tribune.

“However, we will examine whether any contamination took place in the river water,” he added.

On information, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rafiqul Hasan visited the affected area.

Locals discovered hundreds of dead fishes floating in the river in the morning and started collecting those.

Experts say such death normally occur after heavy rain. The cold rain water causes water turnover and brings warmer de-oxygenated water up into the water column making it tough for fishes to survive.

Meanwhile, the government Thursday declared a week-long ban on fishing in the Haor areas of Sunamganj as piscine diseases started killing tonnes of fishes in the aftermath of the recent flash flood due to rotten paddy and polluted water.
