The Department of Environment on Wednesday raided and evicted three illegally built brick kilns in Narsingdi. Each of the kilns was fined Tk2 lakh, resulting in a total of Tk6 lakh having been collected during the raids.
According to Abdus Salam, senior chemist of the Narsingdi Department of Environment, the brick kilns in question were the PBM Brick Field in Narsingdi’s Sahepratab, MBA in Mahabdi’s Khanmardi and PBM in Shibpur’s Kararchar. Executive Magistrate of the Department of Environment headquarters Mossadeq Mehedi led the operations against the illegal brick fields.
Furthermore, due to a lack of environmental clearance and other valid documents, the three brick fields were destroyed following the eviction.
The senior chemist added that a total of 33 illegal brick fields remained in the Narsingdi district. Among these, writ petitions for 23 fields have been referred to the High Court, while mobile courts have launched an eviction drive against the other 10. In addition, brick fields with chimneys lower than 120ft have had their operations restricted.
