Manikganj UNO torches dredgers
Dredgers set on fire in Manikganj by the local UNO Dhaka Tribune

The UNO of Manikganj, Mohammad Sahadat Khandakar, conducted a drive in Manikganj on Sunday and in a controversial move, torched two dredgers which were being used to illegally lift sand from the Dhaleshwari River.

The operators of the heavy equipment escaped during the drive at Arangabad in Manikganj. Subsequently, with the help of the police, Sahadat set the dredging equipment on fire.

Two influential local politicians had approved the illegal sand lifting activities, which threatened the stability of an under construction bridge in that area.

Defending his actions, the UNO said: “We have previously stopped such activities in this area. Finally, on Sunday evening, we conducted a raid and set fire to two captured dredging machines and destroyed the sand lifting pipes too.”
