100 injured in Gazipur train fire
At least 100 passengers, including women and children, were injured as two coaches of Noakhali-bound Upakul Express train caught fire at Kaliganj Arikhola station, in Gazipur Thursday evening. Dilip Chandra Das, station master of Kaliganj Railway Station, said that the fire broke out as it reached the outer signal at around 5pm. The passengers scrambled to escape when they noticed the fire. In the ensuing stampede, over 100 passengers including women and children have been injured. Several fire-fighting units from Kaliganj rushed to the spot and put out the blaze after 30 minutes of frantic effort, said the station master. Railway communications between Dhaka and rest of the country were cut off for one hour after the incident. The cause of the fire was as yet unknown on filing of this report at 9pm yesterday. Later, the train resumed its journey to Noakhali around 5:30pm, he added.
