The country is not getting any benefit from the tree plantation movement only due to the excessive use of fuelwoods in the brick kilns

Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) has called for increased monitoring on the use of fuel woods in the brick kilns across the country.

The environmental watchdog has pointed out that almost 50% of the 9,700 brickfields including the ones with drum chimneys across the country are illegal and these fields have been burning bricks without using modern technologies.

The information was revealed during a press conference titled “Brick Kiln Pollution: Environment, Public Health and Food Security at Risk” on Saturday.

The speakers claimed that the brickfield companies are scarcely paying any heed to the existing obligations like obtaining environmental clearance and licence from district deputy commissioners.

The speakers also noted that the country is not getting any benefit from the tree plantation movement only due to the excessive use of fuelwoods in the brick kilns.

A number of recommendations were placed during the conference including identifying and banning of the brick kilns with drum chimneys, bringing the fuelwood using brickfield owners to book and shutting down the brickfields that are yet to install environment-friendly modern technologies.

Poba’s Joint General Secretary Lenin Chowdhury presided over the conference while Poba General Secretary Engr Abdus Sobhan presented the key paper during the conference.
