Amid criticism over the government initiative of setting up a coal-fired power plant in Rampal area near the Sundarbans, Sheikh Hasina addresses the media to present the government's argument

5:59pm: A portion of netizens are supporting the project too, citing economic fact.

5:45pm: The premier just wrapped up the briefing. 

5:12pm: Netizens seem unhappy over the standard of the questions the journalists are asking the briefing.

5:05pm: The prime minister finished briefing the media. The Q&A session has just started.

5:02pm: “…I don’t see any difference between the demonstrators against the Rampal project with the terrorists at the Holey Artisan cafe in Gulshan…”

4:44pm: “…I don’t see any reason why these people are against the project since the best safety and environmental measures have been taken so that the largest mangrove forest (the Sundarbans) remains intact…”

4:42pm: The prime minister presented examples of some coal-fired plants in the US, Germany, and China and argued that the Rampal project is following the same environmental safety protocol. 

4:36pm: The prime minister has apparently cracked a joke on how carbon can be used as facial mask. The audience burst in laughter.    

4:32pm: “…Has she (BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia) ever been there? I don’t believe she has, but I have. I know the reality, she (Khaleda) doesn’t…”

4:24pm: “….The cat came out of the bag now. BNP chief expressed solidarity with that quarter (people who have been demonstrating against the Rampal project…”

 

4:22pm: A certain quarter in the society is trying sabotage the project (Rampal) by fabricating stories and twisting facts.”

4:21pm:  “…Like developed countries, we are focusing on coal-fired plant since it’s rather inexpensive.”

4:18pm: “…Awami League-led government has established the fact that we are a pro-people government….” 

4:15pm: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina starts briefing.

4:07pm: A powerpoint presentation is being showed to the attendees.

4:05pm: Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, made the introductory remarks.

4:03pm: The press briefing is about to kick off at the prime minister’s official residence Ganobhaban.
