‘One-sided election does not reflect the opinion of the majority’
Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said, voters are showing reluctance in participating in the upazila parishad elections, which reflects an ominous sign for a democratic nation.
He said this in a written statement, regarding the fifth phase of upazila parishad polls, to the media on Wednesday.
“The most alarming aspect of this upazila parishad polls is the unwillingness of voter participation, which is an ominous sign for a democratic country, and the nation. We must uphold our democracy by holding free, and fair elections,” he said in the statement.
He also raised the question whether the polls were held as per the constitution as the constitution provides no scope for ‘outsiders’ to interfere with the activities of the local government.
“Upazila parishad polls were one-sided, as opposition parties did not participate in it. Such one-sided polls are not good for democracy. Democracy means that the opinion of the majority gets expressed in an inclusive, and participatory manner,” added the statement.
“The one-sided election does not reflect the opinion of the majority. A suitable environment is essential in the field of election for all parties,” he added.
