Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder on Sunday questioned why the zeal for the ongoing upazila parishad elections was missing in the last national polls.

The commissioner was speaking to the press at his Election Commission office.

He said: “A lot of people are saying that the authorities are firmly acting against irregularities. Then why was the Election Commission not this active during the general election?”

Mahbub continued: “The upazila polls are not participatory. We need to identify why we have failed to earn the trust of the voters. It is absurd to blame them. The Election Commission needs to scrutinize itself for all the elections we have conducted over the past two years. We need to ensure we never repeat the mistakes of the past.”

He also said parliamentary and local polls should be completely under the control of the Election Commission for the sake of democracy.
