An Awami League candidate of upazila election has reportedly been hacked by unidentified miscreants in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur district.

Hossain Mosharraf Saku, 48, chairman candidate of Mathbaria upazila, was attacked around 11pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, current Chairman of Gulishakhali union Riazul Alam Jhan, 45, was also injured during the incident.

Confirming the matter, Mathbaria police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) MR Shawkat Hossain said: "A case will be filed in this regard."

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Mathbaria Awami League Organizing Secretary Rafiqul Islam Ripon claimed that supporters of the party’s rebel candidate Riazul Islam attacked the duo.

He said they were attacked at the Awami League office in Gulishakhali union after arriving there following their campaigns. The rebel candidate supporters also attacked supporters of the Awami League candidate when they came to their defence.

After being contacted by locals, Mathbaria police went to the spot and sent the injured to Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex. However, Hossain Mosharraf Saku and Riazul Alam Jhan were sent to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Commenting on the matter, rebel candidate Riazul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: "My election office and the union's Chhatra League office were vandalized under the leadership of Gulishakhali UP chairman Riazul Alam Jhan."

"The incident made the public angry, who attacked them back. My supporters were not involved in this attack," he added.
