Jubo League leader killed in Rangamati polls violence

Ghagra Union Jubo League General Secretary Md Bashir Uddin died of a fatal head injury

A Jubo League leader has been killed in a clash between Awami League and BNP activists in Kawkhali upazila in Rangamati. 

The deceased, Ghagra Union Jubo League General Secretary Md Bashir Uddin, was injured during the clash in Rangipara area, and later died at a hospital in Chittagong on Sunday morning.

He was a polling agent at the Kashkhali Government Primary School polling centre.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Minhazul Islam said: “Jubo League leader Md Bashir Uddinand a few others engaged in an altercation with a group of BNP activists as he was heading towards a polling centre around 7am.

“The altercation soon escalated into a clash, leaving Bashir with a fatal head injury. He was initially taken to Kawkhali Upazila Health Complex, and later transferred to Popular Hospital in Chittagong, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.”

The UNO added that 13 others were also injured in the clash. Meanwhile, Kawkhali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monjur Alam assured that the situation is presently peaceful and under control.
