The Election Commission (EC) is considering slowing down the internet speed across the country on election day.
Speaking at a training session on Wednesday, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said the internet speed would go back to normal after 5pm, when the poll results are ready to be sent.
The training program was held for data entry operators on the election result management and candidate information management at the Election Commission Headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
“I don't think there will be a problem [in the announcement of poll results] if the internet speed is restored to full speed after 5pm on the voting day,” the Election Commission secretary said.
He said the commission would print the ballot papers once candidates in all the seats have been finalized.
The commission is aiming to send ballot papers to all the polling centres a week before the voting day - December 30, he added.
Terming the election arrangement daunting, Helal Uddin said the commission was working to ensure a free, fair and disciplined election.
‘Don’t make any mistake’
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, who was also present at the event, urged the officials not to make any mistake while counting votes and announcing the results, as it may cost the commission the people’s confidence in it.
“We are impressed by people’s interest in the upcoming election. There is a festive mood in the country centering the polls,” the CEC said.
He further added that the Election Commission was considering the suggestions forwarded by political parties and their candidates regarding the election arrangement.
“Be careful so that one mistake does not damage the entire election process,” he warned the officials in training.
