Speakers identified ways to improve the standards of Dhaka University (DU) at a seminar organised by Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja) in the capital on Friday.

The seminar, titled "Position of Dhaka University in International standards and duties to do," was held at the university's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) cafeteria.

Duja organized the seminar as the University failed to achieve any position in world ranking in recent University ranking of Times Higher Education (THE) – an UK based magazine.

A proposal was made to solve the problem on the recommendations made by different student bodies'.

The proposal fixed some ways of thriving educational quality including ensuring student-friendly atmosphere, amplifying budget for research and students’ welfare, exchanging ideas and views among international universities, facilitating administrative activities, appointing quotable teachers and developing residential facilities and others.

They also listed some reasons why Dhaka University is being backward in world ranking which include recruitment of ill-suited and politicized teachers, hampering educational atmosphere for bad politics, having accommodation problems and lack of research and funding.

Professor emeritus of DU Serajul Islam Choudhury, as chief speaker proposed dissolving three-heads (science, arts, commerce) in the county’s education system so that students can take interest in acquiring knowledge instead of focusing on employment.

Prof Serajul said: "Quality of our education system is decreasing because students are losing their interest to acquire knowledge due unemployment problems.

"Students are always busy preparing themselves for different competitive exams including Bangladesh Civil Service to ensure jobs rather acquiring knowledge" he added.

Emphasizing on improved teaching techniques and research work, he said these two factors can improved be further if more foreign students were enrolled. These two are equally important for our universities to be developed, he said.

Speaking as chief guest Vice-Chancellor (VC) of DU Dr. Akhteruzzaman indicated THE's ranking and said: "We have failed to be included in the ranking as the institution that makes university ranking do not get our data. If data is available, obviously we will get position in world ranking.”

"We will work according to those recommendations," he added.

DU Pro VC (Administration)   Dr. Mohammad Samad,  Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani, DU Registrar Dr. Enamuzzaman,   Director of Bangladesh Television Harunur Rashid, Duja President Abir Raihan and General Secretary Mahdi Al Muhtasim Nibir, leaders of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), activists and leaders of different students organizations, among others were present in the seminar.
