Traffic clogs up as low-lying areas of Dhaka go underwater
Heavy rains have caused havoc on citizens as many areas of Dhaka went underwater.
Just within half-an-hour of the downpour on Tuesday afternoon, citizens were seen posting videos of waterlogging in Mirpur’s RokeyaSarani and Kazipara, Jahangir Gate, Green Road, parts of Indira Road, Tejgaon, Panthapath, Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, Jhigatala, Shankar, Jatrabari, Bashundhara Residential Area and many places of Old Dhaka.
At the same time, heavy gridlock on major roads, where the areas were inundated, made it extremely difficult for city dwellers to commute. Many people were seen wading through the water to reach their destinations.
Sarjin Sharif, a resident of Shankar area, told Dhaka Tribune: “The road in front of my house has completely submerged in water after the rain.”
“I need to go to work, but I cannot even get out of the house to find a vehicle.”
Nafisa Nazmul, a former student of Brac University, said: “I cannot find a transport to go to Panthapath from Mirpur 10. It is raining cats and dogs.”
“The entire road is under water,” she added.
“The main roads are fine but the lanes inside are under water,” Jatrabari resident Tanjir Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.
IUB faculty member Kazi Mubinul Hasan said: “I live in Bashundhara Residential area. On a usual day, it takes my 45 minutes to reach Shukrabadh, but today [Tuesday], it took me one and a half hours to reach the same destination.”
The heavy downpour in the capital has caused complete gridlock from Karwan Bazar to Banglamotor.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department Meteorologist Rulul Quddus told Dhaka Tribune that 45.3mm of rain was recorded in Dhaka till 3pm on Tuesday.
“There is a chance of light rain tomorrow (Wednesday) in Dhaka, Khulna and Chittagong regions and in the rest of the country it will rain less,” he said.
In its daily bulletin, BMD predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind over the country in the next 24 hours as of 9am Wednesday.
“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, at many places over Khulna and Barisal divisions and a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions during the time,” a met office bulletin said on Tuesday.
Moreover, some places over Barisal, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may see moderately heavy to very heavy falls until Wednesday morning, it added.
