The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested an individual for his alleged involvement in the murder of hotelier Rafikul Islam Junayet in Dhaka.
The arrestee, identified as Anwar Hossain Sobuj alias Sojib alias Shooter Sobuj, 22, is the second-in-command of the top terror Shahadat Bahini, a notorious killer group.
He was arrested from the Jumuna Future Park area on Monday night.
PBI Special Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter on Tuesday in a press release and said acting on a tip-off, a team conducted a raid and arrested Sabuj.
"We, through primary investigation, have come to know that the residential hotel businessman Rafikul Islam Junayet was shot dead at the Paikpara Government Staff Quarter Dhaka's Darussalam area on February 2, 2016, for not giving extortion money," he added.
He said: "Junayet's father bought a residential hotel named Shahjalal in 1997. Shahadat Bahini used to collect extortion money from the hotel.
"But when the notorious killer group demanded one crore as extortion money, Junayet refused. And because of that Shahadat Bahini’s Sobuj, Shooter Sohel, Babu, Anwar, and Rahim later planned and killed him."
"Deceased Junayet’s brother Dr Saeed Hossain Sohag filed a case regarding the incident and following which police arrested Sohel alias Shooter Sohel, 35 and Sheikh Mridul alias Babu alias Mirza, 34 for their alleged involvement in the murder. After that, the case was transferred to police's detective branch," the PBI official added. .
Abul Kalam Azad also said that the detective branch had submitted charge sheet before the court accusing eight people after the arrest of Abdur Rahim and Anwar Hossain Polash.
"The plaintiff of the case appealed no objection petition before the court as he was not satisfied with the investigation of the incident. The court then directed PBI to investigate the case further.
"In keeping with the court order, PBI started the investigation and arrested Shahadat Bahini’s second-in-command Sabuj for his alleged involvement in the incident. We are trying to arrest those who are absconding and were involved in this killing," he added.
