Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that doctors posted in the upazilas will be sacked if they do not do their duties properly.

"Strict measures will be taken swiftly if [doctors] posted in upazilas do not stay there. If necessary, they will be fired," she said on Sunday, while inaugurating the five-day annual conference of the deputy commissioners (DCs) at Shapla Hall in the Prime Minister's Office.

She said without taking this kind of tough punitive step, it will not be possible for the government to ensure medicare services at the grassroots level, reports UNB.

Sheikh Hasina said there are problems because doctors, surgeons and anaesthetists are not remaining at upazila level hospitals.

She pointed out the lack of residences at the upazila level, as a contributing factor to the absence of doctors.

In connection with this, she mentioned that she had already instructed the construction of multi-storied buildings in the upazila level to mitigate the accommodation problem.

"The transferred government officials will stay there," she said.

The prime minister also mentioned that the government is thinking of accommodating doctors there.

"We are doing many things but we are not able to keep the doctors at upazila level in any way. This is a great problem," she added.
