Nur said he will discuss general students’ rights after taking charge

Update : 22 Mar 2019, 04:05 PM

Newly-elected Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Vice-President (VP) Nurul Haque Nur will take charge of his office duties on Saturday.

He disclosed the decision on Friday at a press conference held at the Madhur Canteen in Dhaka University (DU) at 3:30pm.

He said he wanted to talk about general students’ rights after taking charge.

Social Service Secretary Akhter Hossain will also take charge in the same debut meeting which will be held at 11am at the Ducsu building.

Nur said: “Prioritizing students’ mandate, we will officially take the responsibilities as Ducsu representatives. We will work together with the general students to solve problems faced by the students along with the re-election issue.”

Five major panels have boycotted the polls and are protesting against alleged vote rigging and demanding fresh Ducsu and hall union polls.

Expressing solidarity with the agitated students, Nur said: “DU authorities failed to hold free and fair polls as per the nation’s demand. Questions have been raised over the Ducsu polls. Raising questions against DU is akin to raising question against Bangladesh itself.”

Nur and Akhter are the only elected candidates from Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) – the group which spearhead the quota reformation movement last year.

Nur called on the authorities of all universities and colleges to hold the respective students’ union polls as soon as possible to build up proper student-politics friendly environment.

“In the absence of the students union, student politics have been marred by violence and terror activities,” Nur adeed.

Several members of the BGSRPC as well as Convener Hasan Al Mamun, Joint-Convener Faruk Hasan and Md Rashed Khan were present at the press conference.
