Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested three suspected members of a group, specializing in fraud, who faked the signature of the prime minister.

They were arrested in Dhaka on Monday night, Special Superintendent of Police (Serious Crimes and Homicide Squad) Syeda Zannat Ara told the Dhaka Tribune.

She did not disclose any details about the three, who are being held for further investigation.

However, Zannat said that the trio was arrested based on information given by three other members of the gang who were arrested from the city’s Pallabi area on November 29 last year.

She identified those previously arrested as Helal Uddin, 55, Enamul Haque, 48, and Najmul Habib. They are current being interrogated by police for more information.

All six are accused in a case filed at Pallabi police station.

Addressing the press at CID’s office in Malibagh on Tuesday, Zannat said: "This group of fraudsters has been involved in such crimes for a very long time.

"We were able to recover fake documents with fake signatures of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. We also recovered five mobile phones and fake documents showing they had Tk54,000 crore in bank accounts."

She said: "The group tried to convince people that they would build a mosque and madrasa; and in the process, they pocketed Tk42 lakh."

"The group printed fake Bangladesh Bank documents. They also forged and faked the signature of the prime minister to convince innocent victims."
