Dhaka Central Jail entrance collapses

According to a prison guard, who refused to reveal the name, the collapse could have taken place due to the use of sub-par construction material.

At least 10 labourers were injured when the main gate at the entrance to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj collapsed on Sunday morning, confirms Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin.

Five labourers- Faruk, Saiful, Moin Uddin, Rajjak and Younus sustained serious injuries. They were admitted to different specialized hospitals in Dhaka.

“Labourers were working on the under-construction gate in the morning. The gate suddenly collapsed, leaving five men injured,” said Brig Gen Iftekhar Uddin.

Witnesses said the ceiling of the gate fell down around 9am when labourers had been working on the prison entrance gate.

Confirming the incident, Keraniganj fire service station In-charge Sajib Sarkar said two units of firefighters rushed there and rescued the labourers.

According to a prison guard, who refused to reveal the name, the collapse could have taken place due to the use of sub-par construction material.

Brig Gen Iftekhar Uddin said the incident is being investigated.
