The project aims to mitigate water-logging in Noakhali through the construction of a flood control and drainage system for the district
The government is making constant efforts for the development of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Thursday while inaugurating a flood control project by video conference from her official residence at Ganabhaban.
The project aims to mitigate water-logging in Noakhali through the construction of a flood control and drainage system for the district.
“Our utmost goal is to ensure overall development of Bangladesh and in view of this the government has designed various schemes whenever we have come to power,” the prime minister said.
The premier said the project will control intrusion of silts and saline water during the high tide in Noakhali.
“This will contribute to the overall economic development of the district by boosting agricultural production and developing the environment,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said that after the murder of Bangabandhu in 1975, Bangladesh had witnessed no remarkable progress in the socioeconomic areas but had embarked on a planned development path again in 1996 when the Awami League assumed power.
“The people of Bangladesh have lost almost 29 years from their life since 1975 as the military dictators who ruled the country during that time were only busy in making their own fortune,” she said.
Under the water-logging mitigation project in Noakhali district, about 182km of the Noakhali Canal will be excavated, and 7km of waterways of the Bamoni River will be dredged.
In addition, a sluice gate of 19 vents and a sluice gate of two vents will construct on the Bamoni River and Mouishmora Khal respectively.
The project also includes the excavation of diversion channels and the construction of a closer on the Bamoni River; river bank protection at Muchapur, Guchhagram, Char Kachhapia, Char Lengta and Char Elahi of Sandheep Channel; and the construction of embankments and loop cut digging.
The Tk325 crore project will be implemented by 34 Engineering Construction Brigade of Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Water Development Board by 2021.
After inaugurating the projects, the premier through a video conference talked with the officials and beneficiaries of the projects at Noakhali.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Monju and Chief of Bangladesh Army General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq spoke, among others, were all present on the occasion, conducted by principal secretary Najibur Rahman.
