Family says police is refusing to lodge a case as one of the alleged rapists is the nephew of the local MP

A ninth grader girl has committed suicide in Panchagarh after two youths allegedly kept raping her for the last three months, threatening to circulate videos of the incident online.

The victim is Rahima Akter Sonia, 14, daughter of Jaherul Islam of Kalaram Jot village under the district’s Tetulia upazila.

She was a student of Kazi Shahabuddin Girls High School and College in the area.

Her family members said the rapists – Shamsul Alam Rajan and Atikur Rahman Atik – had periodically raped her over the last three months, blackmailing her with the video footage.

Rajan is a ward boy at Tetulia Upazila Health Complex and Atik is an employee at the local customer care centre of mobile phone operator Banglalink. Both have been missing since the suicide.

Rajan is also the nephew of Md Nurul Islam Sujan, ruling Awami League-backed lawmaker from Panchagarh 2 constituency.

Traumatised by the continued sexual exploitation, Sonia finally revealed the matter to her mother Selina Begum and maternal uncle Faruq on Monday.

The two culprits also threatened to leak the video footage when Selina and Faruq confronted them.

Unable to tolerate the situation, Sonia ended up hanging herself from a tree when she was on her way to coaching the following day.

Sonia’s mother Selina Begum said: “The two rapists also threatened to kill my daughter, if she had disclosed the matter.”

Meanwhile, Jaherul said police were refusing to register a case he wanted to file.

Sonia’s parents alleged that police rejected to accept the case since Rajan was using the political identity of his uncle, the MP.

However, Tetulia police station’s Officer-in-Charge Sares Chandra said they had lodged an unnatural death case in this connection.

“If her family files any complaint in this regard, we will definitely take proper legal measure after receiving the autopsy report,” he said.
