Man hacked to death over football match in Barisal

A man was hacked to death and three other injured over a football match at Selimpur Bazaar in Muladi upazila of Barisal on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Rabiul Howlader, 22, son of Bazlur Rahman Howlader of Tayka-Tumchar village of the upazila.

Rabiul was a cook at a restaurant in Dhaka. He came to his native village to observe Eid with family members.

The injured were Shariful Islam, Ibrahim and Year Hossain.

Mujibor Rahman, acting chairman of local Batamara union parishad, said villagers of Tumchar and Selimpur arranged a friendly football match at Selimpur secondary school field on Thursday.

A dispute arose over the match.

Friday morning was to see an arbitration to settle the dispute at Selimpur Bazaar.

However, both sides engaged in a violent armed conflict with sharp weapons at the arbitration around 10:30am Friday.

Robiul was hacked to death on spot and three others were severely injured.

Police reached the spot by speedboat at noon and recovered the body of the deceased and injured, dispersing the mob, the UP chairman added.

OC Matiur Rahman of Muladi police said Robiul’s body was sent to Barisal SBMCH morgue for autopsy.

However, no cases were lodged for this incident till filing this report.

Injured Ibrahim and Year Hossain are admitted to upazila health complex and Shariful was sent to Barisal SBMCH.
