A Bhola court has sent three persons, including Biplob Chandra Shuvo, to jail in connection with a Facebook post hurting religious sentiments that triggered a clash between police and locals at the Borhanuddin upazila.

Bhola Senior Judicial Magistrate Farid Alam sent them to jail in a case field against them under the Digital Security Act on Monday.

The other two persons sent to jail are – Md Imon, 18, and Rafsan Islam Sarif Shakil, 18, both hailing from the Kachia union of the Borhanuddin upazila.

Earlier on Sunday, four people were killed and over 200 injured in Bhola's Borhanuddin upazila as police opened fire to disperse a mob, who gathered to demand punishment for a Hindu man who they believed was responsible for hate conversations against Islam on the Facebook Messenger app.

On Sunday evening, Buhanuddin police station Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain filed a case against them and seven to eight unnamed others under the Digital Security Act for spreading messages containing derogatory remarks on Islam.

Police said Shakil was arrested from the Golachipa upazila of Patuakhali and Imon from the Kachia union.

Police and locals said messages containing derogatory remarks about Allah and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were sent to several individuals from the Facebook ID of Biplob Chandra Shuvo. Screenshots of the messages went viral on Facebook, triggering condemnation and protests.

Biplob went to the Borhanuddin police station on October 19 to file a general diary claiming that his account had been hacked. Police also detained two suspected hackers.

A case was filed against 5,000 unknown people over the clash with Borhanuddin police station.

On Monday, protestors in Bhola sought the removal of the district’s police chief and officer-in-charge (OC) of Borhanuddin police station within 72 hours.

All Party Muslim Unity Council Convener Maulana Mohibullah and Member Secretary Tajuddin Faruk announced a six-point demand at a press conference at the Bhola Press Club on Monday morning.
