Court show-causes BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, 9 other leaders
Senior leaders of BNP have held an emergency meeting at the party’s Naya Paltan office over a court order halting the national council of its student wing.
The meeting, presided over by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was held on Thursday night.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court issued temporary injunction blocking the national council of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP.
The council of the student body was scheduled to be held on September 14.
Judge Nusrat Jahan Bithi of the Senior Assistant Judge Court 4 passed the order after former Chhatra Dal religious affairs secretary Md Aman Ullah filed a case with the court.
After the hearing, the court also issued a show cause notice to the BNP secretary general and nine other leaders asking why the temporary injunction would not be imposed.
They were also asked to reply to the notice within seven days.
Dhaka District Judges' Court official Md Tariqul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier, former leader Aman Ullah submitted his nomination form for a post in the Chhatra Dal in the upcoming council session, however his application was rejected.
“Being aggrieved, he filed the case citing, what he claimed, was a violation of his rights,” said sources inside BNP.
Chhatra Dal's last committee, formed on October 14, 2014 with Rajib Ahsan as its president and Akramul Hasan as general secretary, was dissolved on June 3, 2019.
On the same day, a BNP press release signed by its Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said a new committee would be formed within the next 45 days.
The press release also said that candidates planning to contend for various posts will have to be primary members, students of any educational institution in Bangladesh, and must have passed SSC and equivalent examinations on either the year 2000 or later on.
The reformed rules and regulations upset a group of Chhatra Dal leaders, prompting them to stage a demonstration starting from June 10, seeking the withdrawal of the age limit.
On June 11, the angry Chhatra Dal leaders locked the BNP office and staged demonstrations at erratic intervals.
Amongst all these, BNP on June 23 announced that the council of Chhatra Dal would be held on July 15.
However on July 14, the party expelled a dozen demonstrating leaders of Chhatra Dal, hours after they announced to continue their movement until their demand for the removal of age limit was met.
Later, BNP's standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, along with Joint General Secretary Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal held a meeting with the aggrieved Chhatra Dal leaders. Acting BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman also joined the meeting through Skype and convinced the angry Chhatra Dal leaders to withdraw their demonstration.
In latest development, the national council session of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was deferred to September 14.
