HC wants measures to control Aedes menace within 24hrs

The court also ordered Dhaka South and North city corporations to take measures to prevent mosquito-borne diseases including dengue and chikungunya within 24 hours

The High Court has issued a suo moto rule asking the Dhaka North and South city corporations to explain as to why they should not be cited for their inactivity to stop the spread of dengue disease and eradicate Aedes mosquitoes.

The court also ordered Dhaka South and North city corporations to take measures to prevent mosquito-borne diseases including dengue, and chikungunya within 24 hours.

The rule was issued by a bench comprising of justices Tariq Ul Hakim and Mohammad Suhrawardy on Sunday, who also set July 22 for the next hearing.

The High Court bench also asked the authorities concerned to inform it about the preventive measures being taken regarding dengue, and chikungunya diseases.

Mayors and chief executive officers of Dhaka South and North city corporations, health secretary, local government secretary, and director general of health services directorate were made respondent in the rule.

Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim, accompanied by Assistant Attorney General Zayedi Hasan, and Sayera Fairuj stood for the state.

On July 2 the High Court expressed its dissatisfaction with the city corporations.

Before the start of the rainy season, the High Court expressed its worries, and warned the CEOs of both Dhaka city corporations about the high fertility in Aedes mosquitoes.

It can be noted that earlier on July 11, a Supreme Court lawyer, Advocate Tanzim Al Islam, served a legal notice to the mayor, and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Dhaka South City Corporation, seeking Tk50 lakh in compensation for his wife suffering from dengue fever.
