The work is almost done, a court official says
A certified copy of the verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, which saw BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia sentenced to five-year imprisonment, will likely be out on Wednesday, a court official says.
“Processing the certified copy is almost complete,” Mokarram Hossain, Dhaka Special Court 5 assistant bench officer, told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
“The copy might be handed over to Khaleda Zia’s lawyers tomorrow (Wednesday),” he added.
Khaleda’s lawyers had asked for a certified copy of the verdict on February 8 after the former prime minister and five others, including her son, were convicted of embezzling Tk2.1 crore in donations meant for an orphanage.
The defence counsel wanted to appeal against the verdict on Sunday but they are yet to get either a photocopy or a certified copy.
Khaleda, a three-time former prime minister, was sentenced to five years in jail while five others were handed down 10-year imprisonment and filed Tk2.1 crore each.
The BNP chairperson has been kept at the old central jail in Dhaka since.
