Acting on a tip-off, a team of the DoE conducted a raid at the tannery on Monday
An old tannery in Chittagong has been found guilty of defying a ban on factory production by tanning leather covertly.
Department of Environment (DoE) Assistant Director (Technical) of Chittagong Metro Sangjucta Das Gupta told the Dhaka Tribune that Madina Tannery was first sealed off on May 16, 2015, for tanning leather without setting up an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).
To dodge the DoE authorities and continue its factory productions, Madina Tannery then illegally set up another unit 800 yards from the main factory.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of the DoE conducted a raid at the tannery on Monday.
The factory owner was summoned to a hearing at the Chittagong office of the DoE on charges of running factory productions without obtaining Environment Clearance Certificate (ECC) and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).
Azadur Rahman Mollick, director of DoE (Chittagong Metro), first ordered the shutdown of the illegal unit of the tannery for polluting the environment.
