Both men and women rallied to protest the aggression of corporations like Monsanto as well as the genetic modification of crops.
Over 500 farmers from 18 villages in Delduar upazila, Tangail and Atghoria upazila, Pabna took part in two separate rallies in solidarity with the Global March Against Monsanto 2017 on Saturday.
The rally in Delduar was organised by UBINIG and the one in Atghoria was organised by Nayakrishi Andolon.
Men and women participated in the programme with great enthusiasm and determination defying the hot summer sun.
They chanted slogans against the aggression of corporations like Monsanto in local agriculture and poisoning the food system.
They also demanded to save the seeds of local varieties of crops and rallied against genetic modification of foods.
Bt Brinjal – the first genetically modified (GM) crop in Bangladesh – has been a major concern in both Arghoria and Delduar.
Nazrul Islam, a farmer from Atghoria, said he was provided with Bt Brinjal seeds two years ago and he faced a huge loss when he cultivated this variety.
Farmers also demanded justice against the damages caused by Monsanto for violating their rights to preserve seeds and to grow crops of their own choice.
They said Monsanto herbicides damage soil and environment and also pose threats to human health.
