A fire erupted at a readymade garment market in Keraniganj on Sunday night and reportedly gutted 250 shops.

The fire broke out around 11pm Sunday at a shop of the Nur Supermarket, when a nearby transformer went off, said the Director (operation) of Fire Service and Civil Defence Lt Col Zillur Rahman.

He said the fire spread fast from one shop to another as those were made of corrugated iron sheets.

Ten firefighting units from Sadarghat, Keraniganj and Postagola rushed to the spot and doused the blaze around 2am, he said.

Munir Hossain, a shop owner, said: “I had closed my shop at 8pm and at around 11pm heard that a fire broke out at my shop. Most shops in the market were burned down.”

Sheikh Ishtiak Ahmed Nipu, president of the shop owners association, said the fire has damaged the goods and products of the 250 shops, causing huge losses to the shop owners.
