The Prime Minister's Office has dismissed the news report on an assassination attempt against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In a statement released to the press on Sunday, the PMO said the report published in several regional and international news outlets was completely baseless.
The release is signed by Ashraful Alam Khokan, deputy press secretary to the prime minister.
A report first published on the Myanmar-based magazine Mizzima claimed that some members of the prime minister's security detail were apprehended in August for their plot to assassinate her in collaboration with some Islamist militants. The report was then carried by several Indian news outlets.
The cabinet committee on law and order which held a meeting on Sunday afternoon also discussed the news report.
“The news about an attempt on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's life is not true. The government has no knowledge of such attacks,” Industries Minister and senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu, the president of the committee, said after the meeting.
However, earlier on the day Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader said at an event that jealous of the praise she had received over the Rohingya issue worldwide, "local and international interests were conspiring to kill the prime minister."
The story was reported by Indian journalist Subir Bhaumik, BBC's former bureau chief for East and Northeast India. He is currently a consultant editor with Mizzima.
Subir reiterated in a TV talk show on Sunday that his sources were reliable and that such an attack plan at the PMO had been foiled.
