‘We are working to bring down the trade deficit’

The prime minister went to India on Friday on a four-day state at an invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports the Business Standard

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said her government is working on getting more investment from India to bring down the trade deficit.

The premier made the statement while addressing India Foundation Awareness Programme in Delhi on Monday.

The prime minister went to India on Friday on a four-day state at an invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reports the Business Standard.

Hasina said: “To address trade deficit, we are also working on getting more investment from India particularly in the special economic zones of Bangladesh. We are already seeing great interest from the biggest business houses in India.”

Calling India a partner in Bangladesh’s path to progress, the prime minister said the two countries witnessed progress in sectors of, connectivity, power, trade and commerce, health and cultural exchange.

Calling for more concentrated efforts against security threats, she said: “We have put in place multi-layered and effective bilateral security architecture with many dedicated joint institutional mechanisms for targeted and coordinated actions.”

Hasina said security threats from state and non-state actors tend to undermine the efforts to integrate our economies and societies.

Parliament on March 11 unanimously adopted a resolution declaring March 25 as Genocide Day, in remembrance of the brutality carried out by the Pakistani Army in the “Black Night” of March 25, 1971.

While talking about Genocide Day Prime Minister Modi’s commitment in remaining with the effort of declaring March 25 as Genocide Day, She called on the international community to give their recognition to the day.

Regarding the Teesta issue, Hasina said the Indian prime minister has assured her that his government will conclude the water sharing treaty at the soonest.
