Update : 02 Jan 2017, 04:11 PM
Police have detained two persons in connection with the attacks on the Hindu minority on October 30 last year in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. The detainees are Monoranjan Devnath, 40, secretary of Haripur union parishad (UP), and Uttam Kumar Das, 25, personal assistant of UP Chairman Dewan Atiqur Rahman Akhi, the prime accused. Police detained them from Haripur area on Sunday evening as they have close connection with the main accused Akhi, said Md Abu Jafar, officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar police station. “Their detainment will help police arrest the UP Chairman Dewan Atiqur Rahman,” the police official added. A total of 105 people have so far been arrested in eight cases in connection with the attacks on the Hindu community. A mob vandalised at least 10 temples and ransacked hundreds of houses belonging to the Hindus over an alleged defamatory Facebook post by a Hindu youth. More than 100 people were injured in the attack which the victims blamed on local influential people.
