According to prosecution, Joynal and Abul Bashar along with others had beat up Shamsul Islam, son of Abul Khair Patwari of the village, to death over land dispute at Talhati village in Sadar upazila in the district on September 21, 1996. Later, Shahab Uddin, elder brother of the deceased, filed a case in this connection with Lakshmipur Sadar police station against five people including Joynal and Abul Bashar.
