Abdullah Al Mamun, the father of Olympic gold medalist Margarita Mamun, died in Moscow Friday.
The 52-year-old marine engineer died at his home around 5pm Bangladesh time, his nephew Jahidul Hassan told Bangla Tribune over the phone from Rajshahi. Details about his death could not be known immediately.

Mamun was born in Rajshahi. He went to Russia in 1983.
Margarita won gold in rhythmic gymnastics in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Her mother Anna is a former Russian rhythmic gymnast.

The 20-year-old Russian, who goes by the nickname of “The Bengal Tiger” in Russian athletics arena, was delighted that her victory was also being celebrated in her father's homeland.

Margarita visited Bangladesh in 2009 but poor infrastructure of gymnastics in the country meant the federation failed to help her in her pursuit.

According to Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation, Margarita rejected the proposal to be a part of the Bangladesh contingent in 2012 as she was a part of the junior Russian team and on the verge of moving to the senior side.
