CCTV cameras would be installed to ensure surveillance from Shahbagh to Central Shaheed Minar premises ahead of International Mother Language Day on February 21, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have said.

DMP Commissioner Mohammad Asaduzzaman Miah said the areas adjacent to the Shaheed Minar would have four phases of security measures in place.

Addressing a press conference at the DMP media centre yesterday, he said more than 20,000 police personnel would remain on duty in different areas of the capital on February 21.

“Of the police personnel, 8,000 in uniforms and 1,000 in plainclothes will ensure security near Shaheed Minar area on that day,” the DMP chief said.

After the president, the prime minister and other VIPs have paid their homage after midnight, other people would be allowed to enter the Shaheed Minar premises through Palashi intersection and exit through Chankharpool and Doyel Chattar intersections after 12:45am, he added.

“No one other than the VVIPs and VIPs will be allowed to enter the Shaheed Minar premises using alternative routes,” Asaduzzaman said.

But when asked about what security measures would be in place when BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia comes to pay her tributes, the DMP commissioner said other important persons would have to submit applications to enter through Doyel Chattar route for security purposes.

He also stated that no political party would be allowed to bring out any kind of procession in the Shaheed Minar area on February 21.

Vehicular movement would be controlled between 7pm on February 20 and 2pm on February 21, Asaduzzaman said, adding that cars carrying Dhaka University stickers would have to use a fixed route.

People would have to enter through archways and visitors’ cars would have to be parked at Dhaka University gymnasium field.

The DMP and RAB have already set up control rooms near the Shaheed Minar, while one platoon of police personnel have been deployed in the area.
